Research activity

My research activity concerns nuclear physics and statistical physics, in particular the definition and classification of phase transitions in finite systems. The most important result of my scientific career has been the theoretical proposition, and the experimental evidence of a negative heat capacity in nuclear multifragmentation : the state change is associated to abnormally large fluctuations on the atomic scale which lead to thermodynamic anomalies.

This study allows a quantitative metrology of the nuclear matter equation of state, and more generally it allows to understand in a unified framework very different phenomena as collision induced nuclear and atomic fragmentation, supernovae explosion, and metallic cluster melting.

I have recently extended my research interests towards the domain of nuclear astrophysics, more specifically the phase diagram and structure of compact objects.
